Feather earrings are a staple for every jewelry repertoire.  Sporting this accessory can instantly create a unique look. And not to mention, they make a cute last-minute costume prop! Don’t bother dropping a penny on a pair at a pricey boutique when they can easily be designed to one’s personal taste in minimal time, effort, and money.

  •  Materials: 2 peacock feathers, small metal crimps, pliers, scissors, earring hooks, jewelry wire

First select two peacock feathers (or any feather of your choice).  These can be purchased at Michael’s or any craft store.  Cut about 1 ½ inches above the eye of the peacock feather. Trim so that a small portion of the stem is exposed.

For the next step, you will need a metal crimp.  Metal crimps that have an attached loop work best.  However, if you cannot find this, then a makeshift loop can be made using jewelry wire.

Align the edge of the stem inside the opening of the metal crimp.  Using the pliers, crimp down the small piece around the feather stem.

Next, open the loop of the earring hook with pliers. Link the earring hook and the metal crimp together, and close both loops with pliers.

Feel free to experiment with this look by adding beads to the stem of the feather or trying different types of feathers.  For a more natural look, use feathers that complement your hair color and texture.  If you’re looking for a clipped look, go ahead and trim the peacock feather ends accordingly. Otherwise, wear them as is and enjoy!
