New York City winter giving you the blues? Banish them by adding a touch of summer to your wardrobe, with a DIY project straight from day camp!
You will need:
A T-Shirt – Any dark color will work; I chose black for high contrast with the bleach.
Bleach – available at your local drugstore of choice for around $3.
Cardboard – about 12 inches by 15 inches, or big enough to fit inside your shirt.
Chalk – preferably in white or a very light color
Paintbrushes – in a reasonably small size
Plastic Solo cup – use them for something productive for once!
1. Place your piece of cardboard inside your t-shirt, and lay it down on a flat surface.
2. Using chalk, outline the design you want to appear on your shirt. This can be as simple or as intricate as you like.
3. Pour a small amount of bleach into a plastic cup, and go over your design in bleach with your paintbrushes. Be careful not to touch the bleach with your bare hands, as this will sting. (A lot. Trust me.) Don’t worry if the design doesn’t show up right away. Allow to dry.
4. Repeat your design as many times as you’d like. For a more rustic look, carefully shake the paintbrush over your shirt to create a splatter effect.
When finished, your t-shirt should look roughly like the one pictured below. To be safe, I would recommend washing your shirt before wearing it to remove any excess traces of bleach.
